Harrow: A Light and Modern Chesterfield

The chesterfield sofa is a long-standing classic in furniture design, synonymous with comfort, luxury and sophistication. The Harrow is a contemporary interpretation of the chesterfield, blending modern lines with traditional forms of upholstery craft. With tapered legs and cleaner lines, it is distinguished and distinctive, but with a lighter, modern look.

The Harrow sofa has a light and elegant aesthetic, raised off the floor on slim tapered legs. The seat, back and rolled arms are generously padded with deep-button, tufted detail, while the leather on the front of the arms is flat (without stitching or studding, as in the original) for a cleaner, contemporary appearance.

Harrow is upholstered in Commonwealth leather – a New Zealand top-grain, semi-aniline leather that is luxurious in both its soft hand and ability to be easily maintained. As James Stewart uses only top-grain uncorrected leather, we select hides that have few natural blemishes. This leaves only a small pool of hides that represent the highest quality that can be achieved without over processing, and New Zealand offers some of the best hides in the world, known for their unspoilt beauty due to pristine farming conditions. (The bulk of hides for upholstery originate from South America.)

The Harrow is upholstered with a deep, folded tuft in a diamond pattern, and is a superb example of this precise and age-old technique. It takes years for master craftsmen to develop and hone their skill, as it requires strength and accuracy and is slow to create. Each button is hand-sewn to the sofa frame, and the folded tufting requires more leather than other techniques.

Kiln-dried FSC®-Certified hardwood is used for the sturdy frame, and is padded, corner blocked, glued and stapled. The exposed base and tapered legs are made with hardwood, and sinuous springs and webbing provide comfort and support for the seat and back cushions, helping them to stay plump and fuller.

Harrow 3 STR Sofa and Armchair are run in the James Stewart Stock Program in Commonwealth Cork. The warm hues of the Cork leather develop a soft patina and fine lines over time, as it naturally ages with beauty and grace. Other leather colours are by indent order.
